The One Open Door follows the adventures of the author as he seeks to free himself from the sorrow and unhappiness we all endure as humans on this earth. He begins as a confused and desperate young man. As the story unfolds he discovers spiritual practice, he learns to look inward, and then, to his surprise and delight, he begins to see how suffering is caused. He spends some time struggling on his own to find his way, and as he does he begins to have real glimpses of happiness and self-love. Then the big moment comes when he meets the person who will become his teacher. She inspires him to give his life to spiritual practice; for a full year he vacillates between ecstasy and horror until, finally, in a moment of blind courage and inspiration, he casts himself upon the mercy of the monastery she founded and asks for help. Eighteen years of silent Zen training follow. Over time, as he stumbles through every sort of scrape and pitfall imaginable, his commitment deepens, he acquires the tools of awareness practice, he grows up, and eventually he finds the love and acceptance he is searching for. The story is full both of the teachings the author received and the profound, often strange, sometimes hilarious ways he received them. There is a way to end suffering. The One Open Door describes this way through the experience of one person. The book was written at the monastery with the hope that it might assist others to discover the practice of compassionate awareness that the author learned and that the Buddha taught so long ago.

Rarely are we willing to subject ourselves to intense self examination, for fear of what we just might find and the pain the finding might inflict. But D.J. McKay did just that, and his self analysis led him to a Buddhist Monastery in California. What courage it must have taken to lay his soul bare and begin anew . And what courage it must have taken for him to tell us his story. But he did just that in The One Open Door: Adventures of a Zen Buddhist Monk. Thank you, D.J., for sharing your experience in this thoughtful, soul-searing read.Product details

The One Open Door Adventures of a Zen Buddhist Monk DJ McKay Books Reviews
Interesting story of this author's journey. The concepts are deep and thought provoking. They require some pondering.
Amazing read. An eye opening experience into a world much greater than the mundane lifestyle of the regular human race.
This book appeared in my life at a crucial time. I give credit to DJ McKay for saving me a lot of anguish. If I hadn't read the book when I did I would have spent endless hours rehashing the past and wishing I had done things differently. I would have constantly tortured myself by inventing imaginary futures, both positive ones and disastrous ones. McKay helped me better understand how to focus on and appreciate the present moment. Most importantly he helped me value myself.
I highly recommend this book.
I could not put down this book! This is a must read for anyone who is on the spiritual path. I am in awe of DJ McKay and the path he chose to take to advance himself and others spiritually. From my heart to yours.......Anita
I love this book. I'm reading it through for the second time. As a long-time Zen practitioner, I'm amazed at how there is always something new to see. This book brings home things I've heard many times before but that I never was able to apply in my life. DJ McKay has a gift for communicating the tools he was taught that enabled him to transform his dissatisfaction with his life into an experience of joy and peace. My partner, who has just started sitting, and I have been reading this book aloud. It is a great way to find language to talk about the processes that go on in an awareness practice for which there aren't words to describe the indescribable. The book is beautifully written and truly a page turner.
This is a life changing book by an inspiring humble teacher. If you are interested in taking a journey alongside this unlikely hero and you're ready to let go of the pain of your past, buy a copy and read it slowly and thoroughly. You will NOT be disappointed.
It starts with simply observing your thoughts and what they are telling you. Are they supporting the magnificent being you are, or limiting you with past beliefs that no longer serve you? David McKay takes us inside of HIS fascinating journey to relieve himself of what we all face, human suffering from 'conditioned mind' which tells us "you are a failure, you are not enough, blah, blah, blah!" He examines himself so courageously and opens himself up to expose the vulnerability we all try to hide.
When you start examining the thoughts you've been thinking, observing them without making yourself wrong, using "non-judgment," you will see that you have the power to change those thoughts that no longer serve you. That's what this book taught me. How to free myself from limiting past (false) beliefs, live in the NOW and experience the peace and joy that results from present moment awareness. It sounds so simple, and it is, but it's not easy. I requires great strength and courage. Fortunately, David has written this book for us which gives us a shortcut from his 18 years of discovering or uncovering his own sweet soul in a Monastery. Thank you, David McKay for sharing your journey with us in writing this book. I found it profoundly life changing.
On the morning following the November election, I found myself in a deep depression. I did not want to read the newspaper, watch any news channel on TV, or do anything that would remind me of the situation our country was about to face. I aimlessly walked around the house, not knowing what to do. I decided to read something that might distract me from this anxiety filled morning, but nothing immediately came to mind. Then I recalled the book that our book group was about to start reading, and thought that this might be as good as anything at that moment. The book was called The One Open Door by David McKay, and describes his experience as a Zen Buddhist monk over a period of 18 years. I read the first 3 or 4 chapters, and found myself relaxing and becoming more centered with each turning page. Clearly, this was just what I needed that day, and the days following, and allowed me to focus inward in finding a sense of peace that was missing when the day began. Dr. John P.
